09/09 Lecture by Professor Ruth Haas on bracing rectangular grids at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea in Burton forum at 3:50 and an organization\ al meeting of the Math Union at 4:00. This meeting is open to all.
09/16 "Geodesics and Morse Theory" by Professor Jim Callahan at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea in Burton forum at 3:50 and a meeting of the Math Union at 4:00.
09/23 "Sperner's Lemma and the Fair Division Problem" by Stephanie Jakus at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea in Burton forum at 3:50 and fun with\ the Union.
09/29 Problem solving from 7:30-9:00 p.m., run by Prof Jim Henle, in the math forum (3rd floor of Burton).
09/30 "Unfolding Smooth Prismatoids" by Patricia Cahn and Nadia Benbernou at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea in Burton forum at 3:50.
10/06 Lecture by Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and author of "A New Kind of Science", at 7:00 p.m. in the Carroll Room of the Cam\ pus Center. The title of the lecture is "A Different Kind of Science."
10/07 Lunch with Stephen Wolfram (12:00-1:00) open to math students and faculty.
10/08 Problem Solving at 3:00 p.m. hosted by Jim Henle, followed by tea at 3:50.
10/13 Jim Henle will host a problem solving session from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Burton forum.
10/14 Jim Henle to talk on "Infinities" at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea at 3:50.
10/21 Dr. Sharon-Lise Normand, professor of health care policy and biostatistics at Harvard Medical School, will be speaking at 3:00 p.m. i\ n Burton 302 on "Statistical Methods for Health Policy Data." An abstract of the talk is available at http://www.math.smith.edu/~nhorton/lecture.html. As usual, her talk will be followed by tea at 3:50. This is part\ of a series of lectures on Applied Statistics.
10/25 At 9:00 p.m. in the forum will be this year's first math movie and game night! There'll be lots of food, fun games (including set!), and cool movies (possibilities include rainman, the proof, inside out, a beautiful mind, etc). We'd lov\ e it if you could stop by.
10/28 Diane Jamrog (Smith, Class of '93) of Lincoln Laboratory will lecture about "Disease Progression Modeling for Biodefense" in burton 302 at 3:00 p.m., followed by tea.
11/04 Presentation of the Math Major!! 5:00-7:00 p.m. in Burton forum. There will be food and juggling!
11/11 Professor Roger Nelson of Mt. Holyoke College will lecture on "Proof without words (and words without proofs)." 3:00 p.m. Burton 302\ , followed by tea in the forum. This talk will explore the role of visualization in mathematics to examine the Fubini principle in a variety\ of settings (including combinatorics, infinite series, geometry, etc.)
11/15 Math movie and game night (3rd floor Burton forum) 9:00-11:00p.m. We'll watch "Good Will Hunting," play Set, and eat yummy junk food\ : popcorn, candy, cookies, and other wonderful things. This will be math nerd paradise!
11/18 Discussion of the "Courage to Teach" with Sam Intrator and possibly other members of the Education Department. 3:00 Burton forum.
12/02 3:00 Burton forum, information and practice session for the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Come find out why math majors make the\ best models. The contest is itself in February. Contact Prof. Ruth Haas for more information.
12/09 On Thursday Dec. 9th, at 3pm in the math forum, Jim Propp of the U. of Wisconsin, Madison, will lecutre: "Bugs, Blobs, and Rotor-Rout\ ers." Following the talk Jim is eager to talk to Smith students over tea about graduate school in general, and opportunities at University of\ Wisconsin in Specific.
